Sinclair Lewis was born in the town of Sank Center, Minnesota. He graduated from Yale and then became an editor and writer. His early writings were unimportant, but when his novel Main Street（《大街》）appeared, he became a famous novelist. He is a satirist（讽刺作家）and the first writer in America to win the Nobel Prize in literature. He describes the daily life of the American people in a small town with a very sharp eye.His characters were so real that his readers could easily recognize them as part of their own experience. The heroine of Main Street is a rebellious（反抗的） young woman who struggles hard to bring culture to her dead little town, and we feel a regret when in the end she decides to conform（顺从）. She failed and from a rebel she became a conformist. Another of his successful novels is Babbit（《巴比特》）. Babbit is a typical American yet he has yearnings（渴望，怀想）and fantasies（幻想）. He tried in every effort to be himself but he failed, and very soon he became aself-satisfied conformist. After these two novels Lewis was noted at home and abroad. In 1930, he won the Nobel Prize. Then he went on to write many novels about other aspects of American life. He grew to be perhaps the most popular novelist of his time.
